Minor hockey is back and the President of Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador is content with registration numbers so far.
Obviously, things look a little different around the rink this season, but Jack Lee says getting young boys and girls back on the ice playing the game they love is always a positive.
There have been a number of modifications though. For example, in a normal year, Lee says there would be 15 players on a team with few breaks in between, while this season teams are limited to ten players plus a goalie, with half-hour sanitization breaks in between.
As for registration, Lee says it’s been good.
He says they’re very pleased with the number of kids who came back to play because early on, the expectation was – not just here in Newfoundland and Labrador, but across the country – that registration numbers would be down. Lee says they haven’t seen that yet.
A number of minor hockey associations across the province still haven’t started.
Lee says it will be more financially-challenging in rural areas, but no association has cancelled the season outright.
He says there have been lots of challenges and modifications. However, there are lots of great volunteers throughout the province that are in this for the long haul.
