Violence against first responders is on the rise.
That’s according to Jerry Earle, the president of NAPE, who was responding to an incident last week where a brick was chucked at the windshield of an ambulance while it was responding to a call.
Earle, a former paramedic himself, says violence has always been present “to a degree.” However, he has heard from paramedics, police officers, and other first responders that violence is escalating—both unseen and in facilities.
He notes this is something that unions and employers must collectively seek to address.
As another example, he says a rock was thrown through the window of a social worker’s home. He says the police need to be involved in these types of situations, noting that one solution could be to have dash cams installed in emergency vehicles to capture such incidents.
