The City of St. John’s has voted unanimously to support a commitment to host the 2025 Canada Summer Games.
The bid comes with a price tag that’s shared among the three levels of government, with the St. John’s bill coming in at about $3-million.
Councillor Maggie Burton acknowledged some citizens might not look kindly on such an expenditure, given the controversy surrounding proposed cuts in next week’s budget.
She expects to hear some negative reaction from the public but she believes the economic spinoffs from such an event have been proven in the past.
Burton said improvements to accessibility and sports infrastructure are also a spinoff benefit of hosting such major events.
St. John’s last hosted the summer games in 1977, while Corner Brook hosted the Canada Winter Games in 1999.
