It’s the end of an era for one iconic downtown barbershop.
After over 50 years of cutting hair and trimming beards, Rick Harris is hanging up his scissors.
The business itself is over 100 years old starting out on New Gower Street. Now 72, Harris started cutting hair in his father’s shop on Brazil Square at the age of 18.
It all began for him in the 1950s, when he swept the floor and did whatever it is that needed to be done. He says he had the “longest apprenticeship in the world, 17 years working with my father.”
Harris later moved the business to Casey Street, where it’s been a fixture for over three decades. Harris was famous for maintaining his $10.50 price for a hair cut.
“Listen, I own what I got, I’m here for the enjoyment of being here more than anything,” says Harris.
Harris is calling it a career this Christmas and showed emotion as he explained his decision to retire.
“There’s a time comes, and you got to wake up to that and say ‘this is it,'” says Harris. He admits he’s made a lot of friends, and they’ve had a lot of fun over the years.
Harris is working on a book, in which he plans to share some of the stories about experiences and customers he’s encountered along the way.
