A new report diving into the impacts of climate change on natural World Heritage sites has placed the two designated locations in Newfoundland and Labrador in good standing.
The outlook report was compiled by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, which says 83 of the 252 natural world heritage sites are actively threatened by climate change. Overall, it states that the outlook is not improving.
Locally, the report says both heritage sites in Gros Morne and Mistaken Point will likely maintain a positive outlook into the future, as long as conservation efforts continue. However, it also says that Gros Morne may require additional conservation efforts to address some areas of concern.
Both have maintained this status since the previous report in 2017.
Worldwide, 18 sites have been classified as critical—including the Great Barrier Reef, which the report says has greatly deteriorated over the last three years.
