Canada’s Ocean Supercluster has announced a new project that will have broad impacts on ocean industries.
The $3.1-million Rutter Internet of Things project, essentially, gives mariners a full suite of radar tools, available in real-time by using cloud-based technology.

Canada’s Ocean Supercluster and Rutter are contributing just over $721,000 each to the project. and the province is putting up just over $743,000. A total of 12 jobs will be created—four at implementation and another eight upon completion.
The new technology will increase efficiencies, foster collaboration between ocean sectors, enhance research, and give the ability to share information on-demand between multiple parties.

Stephen Hale, Rutter’s Vice President, gave an example of how the technology could be used.
He showed a new system developed by the company that measures wave height in real-time.
If any significant waves were measured, it would set off an alarm telling crew members on deck to take cover.
