MHAs will try again today to pass amendments to pension legislation.
The House of Assembly had planned to do that last Thursday after receiving initial approval from all members which is required to fast-track legislation beyond the usual process.
However, Lake Melville MHA Perry Trimper attached a condition that he be allowed to ask a question related to the potential for flooding in the Mud Lake area. That upset many members, some of whom travelled for hours to get the bill passed before Christmas and led to the sudden adjournment of the House.
They’ll try again today to pass the amendments that would allow some people to unlock retirement accounts to access cash.
The earliest anyone would get their money would be early March, although many have said formal passage of the bill would provide peace of mind and help them plan around paying off accumulated debt.
It’s estimated it costs $50,000 for every extra day the House of Assembly has to sit.
