RCMP on the southwest coast are investigating numerous false reports made to the Port aux Basques Fire Department.
According to police, the calls began during the summer and persisted for a short period. However, they returned this month with more than nine fictitious calls made to the fire department between December 20 and 23.
The department uses a call-in paging system, in which callers report fires using recorded voice messages. Police believe that the illegitimate numbers used to call the department are being obtained through an online application.
Police caution that prank calls such as these tie up emergency responders and may impact service during a legitimate emergency.
In addition, those responsible may face criminal charges.
