Newfoundland and Labrador has some pretty unique traditions surrounding Christmas, and Dale Jarvis has collected a few over the years.
One he picked up in Conception Bay North involves announcing the Christmas season by firing off a gun when the Christmas pudding is turned out.
The tradition came from his late father-in-law who grew up in Riverhead, Brigus.
“Shooting out the pudding” involved the firing of a gun into the air when the pudding came out of its bowl, a way of announcing that Christmas was finally here.
Newfoundland and Labrador has an old tradition, especially in more rural areas, of firing off guns to mark big events like weddings, the New Year, and Christmas Day.
