Of all the iconic traditions surrounding Christmas, perhaps one of the most recognized is the Christmas tree, but the erection of Christmas trees inside homes is a relatively new tradition in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Folklorist Dale Jarvis says in the late 1800s, Christmas trees were seen as a bit of a novelty.
At that time, churches and charitable organizations would invite people to come out to see their Christmas tree and make donations or purchase items at a bazaar.
A tradition was sparked in the last century as Christmas trees became more popular, involving youngsters going from house to house asking to see people’s trees, and getting a treat.
