There is always a need for foster parents in Newfoundland and Labrador, and right now that need is great.
Executive Director of the NL Foster Families Association, Diane Molloy says there are so many positive stories that come from the Foster Care Program.
Molloy says when someone is approved to become a foster parent they become a part of a team, working with a social worker, the birth family, and any other professionals who may be involved with the family, always working towards the goal of family reunification.
Molloy says many may be hesitant of becoming a foster parent because they think about the challenges that may come with it, such as “letting go” when a child must return to their birth parents.
However, she says she hears from many who were a part of the program with incredible experiences.
She says the association hears from young people who grew up in foster care about the positive impact it had on their lives. She hears from birth families who talk about the benefits of the program and the support that comes with it. Molloy also hears from foster parents who still speak with the children who grew up in their homes more than 20 years ago.
NL Foster Families Association will be holding an information session virtually via Zoom on Thursday, January 21 at 7:30 p.m. NST for those seeking more information about becoming a foster parent.
