The images are terrifying.
A couple of adults and two children standing on the rocks watching the waves at Middle Cove Beach ended up in the water when the waves knocked them down—coming close to pulling them off the beach and out into the ocean.
It’s the second time in just a few weeks that waves have knocked down onlookers on the beach and comes as no surprise to the Mayor of Logy Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove.
Bert Hickey says waves crashing into Middle Cove Beach might be interesting to watch, but it can be very dangerous. Especially this time of year when the waves are high.
Hickey, who grew up in the community, says rough waves are not uncommon at Middle Cove, and with unusually high waves this winter, he’s warning people to stay off the beach.
Signage is up warning people against getting too close to the water, but that’s not the only hazard in the area.
Hickey says the ice wall that forms on the cliffs also draws onlookers, which can be very dangerous. A young boy was seriously injured in 2019 when part of the ice wall broke off, striking him.
When visiting Middle cove was taking pics of the waves today and the waves came right into shore and almost swept a family out and another man! Scary feeling seeing this! They got to safety in the parking lot after. Thank God! #middlecovenfld #respecttheocean #beach pic.twitter.com/j35Ce0KPhA
