The thoughts of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Agriculture says its thoughts are with Mike Dinn and his family after a fire ravaged through a large barn on the Back Line in the Goulds last night.
There were about 120 head of cattle in the barn at the time—firefighters and others saved about 30 or 40.
Ken Dinn, Platoon Chief with the St. John’s Regional Fire Department, says it was a difficult and dangerous fire to fight with dozens of large and frightened animals in their midst.
He says it was a chaotic and hectic situation.
Twenty-one firefighters battled the blaze from about 9 p.m. last night well into the overnight hours. Dinn says they had to stop people from going into the burning building.
Firefighters went in to try to help but they lost 70-plus head.
Crews were able to prevent the blaze from spreading to the nearby house.
