There is a movement afoot south of the border to have a professional wrestler from this province recognized for his big career inside the ropes.
Jimmy Buckle is originally from Corner Brook but now lives in Auburn, Kentucky. A push is being made there to have Buckle’s career recognized with an induction into the local historic society.
Buckle recalls getting his start in the industry after his sister wrote a letter to wrestler George Cannon. He explains that when Cannon came to the province on a tour he wanted to meet with Buckle. The next thing he knew, he was on a plane heading to Kentucky.
Buckle recalls being very well known in Corner Brook, noting that he still is to this day. He says a story he posted online recently received a lot of attention from people back home and that after 40 years of being away, it’s nice to know he hasn’t been forgotten.
Buckle recalls what it was like at the height of his career, working 20-minute matches in the ring and getting to work with some of the most legendary names in the business.
He remembers traveling in cars with Andre the Giant, and wrestling on the same cards at “Nature Boy” Ric Flair and “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes.
