Good news has been hard to come by over the last year, and the City of St. John’s has been no exception.
That might explain why Mayor Danny Breen broke with informal protocol at yesterday’s public council meeting.
Breen normally goes last in the go-around following the formal agenda, but yesterday he wanted to go first, and for good reason.
He announced the feds are doubling the city’s gas tax revenues this year to $9.6-million.
What’s more, the city is getting back almost all of the $6.2-million it spent on Snowmageddon, around $5.8-million—which will come from Ottawa’s disaster relief fund.
Breen says the city will have no problem finding something to spend it on. He says it’s great news and much-needed funding that will be used to upgrade the city’s aging infrastructure.
