Residents on the Avalon took to social media last night to report a loud rumble as homes and contents shook.
The incident happened around 5:30 with many people reporting they felt and heard the same thing in Paradise, Topsail Pond, Portugal Cove-St. Philips and the west ends of the two cities.
Speculation is that it was blasting in the area, however, some suggest an earthquake. There is no seismic data confirming an earthquake in the area.
Comments on Twitter say there may have been blasting at a quarry in the region but one person who was sitting on their bed when it began to shake says it’s from a construction site near the remote section of Fowler’s Road.
Meteorologist Rodney Barney with Environment Canada says there’s no indication of thunder and lightning.
He says when you get a low inversion where temperatures are cooler near the surface, it helps carry the sound further. The weather made for the perfect conditions to cause the sound to reverberate.
