The Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador believes the path Memorial University is currently on threatens the sustainability of the institution and the government coffers that support it.
The Economic Recovery Team’s report has suggested substantial cuts MUN’s operating budget.
Andrew Furey has not made any commitments on exactly needs to happen with the university, citing public consultation, but has stated that changes need to happen with how MUN operates.
“Memorial University needs to figure out what it wants to be when it grows up” says the Premier, who continues that the university needs to decide if it wants to be an institution for “everybody, every day” or if it wants to take a different route.
Furey further explains that statement, saying he understands that MUN is undergoing a comprehensive review, but says the question is should MUN be a comprehensive university that offers every program to everybody at such a low tuition rate.
