Members of the general public can add their input as part of the provincial government’s engagement process surrounding the naming of Red Indian Lake.
Public engagement sessions are taking place in Millertown, Buchans, and Buchans Junction, but others can also participate by responding to an online questionnaire, or by making written contributions submitted by regular mail, email or fax until June 11.
The public engagement sessions were organized after government announced in the House of Assembly that the name of the lake, long associated with the Beothuk, was being changed to a Mi’kmaq term.
The announcement immediately prompted questions and concerns from the public, many of which surrounded the desire to have the Beothuk people remembered in the name of the lake.
