Questions are being raised about a recent graduation get-together in the woods near Flatrock.
The RNC was contacted as a result of the large gathering on private property in a wooded area of the town Friday night.
Mayor Darrin Thorne says the town received numerous noise complaints about the outdoor party and more besides about the mess that was left on the land.
He says some of the young people involved have since cleaned up the property, along with other volunteers, but questions remain about large gatherings during a pandemic.
Thorne understands that graduation parities are something young people have been participating in for decades, but cautions that the times now are different.
Meanwhile, it is the May 24 weekend and that means a greater likelihood of large gatherings such as the one in Flatrock this past weekend.
Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Janice Fitzgerald is urging anyone considering attending a graduation party to think twice about it.
She reminds us of the limits that have been placed on both formal and informal gatherings, saying that people need to be cautious.
“There’s more to think about than just this weekend—there’s the whole summer to think about,” says Fitzgerald, who reminds us that we only need to look to Nova Scotia to see how quickly things can get out of control.
Flatrock Issues Warning After Partiers Leave Trash Strewn Across Private Property
The Town of Flatrock is threatening action after someone left a big mess on a piece of private property.
The town posted pictures of what remains following what appears to have been a planned gathering on an open piece of land in the town which has become a bit of an outdoor party location.
The pictures show a large tent and fire pit and lots of garbage strewn about.
Mayor Darrin Thorne says they received numerous complaints from area residents since the party which was held Friday night.
He says the town is aware of who the perpetrators are. He says some teenagers responded to the post and did some cleanup.
He’s not against gatherings per se as it’s common to wish to congregate on a weekend or in celebration, but not during a pandemic.
