The RCMP has launched the second phase of their all-terrain vehicle (ATV) safety campaign after what they call a successful first phase of the program.
Phase one of the campaign was launched in response to the high number of deaths of operators of recreational vehicles in 2020. Seventeen people—ranging in age from 14 to 91—died while operating ATVs and snowmobiles in areas policed by RCMP NL.
So far in 2021, there has been just one death in comparison to four in the same time frame last year.
Corporal Jolene Garland, media relations officer with RCMP-NL, says phase two changes things up and they’ll be highlighting those who do things right when it comes to following the rules and wearing proper safety gear. It will run until Labor Day Weekend.
Assistant Commissioner Ches Parsons says the majority of deaths of off-road vehicle operators are preventable, with many involving factors of speed, alcohol consumption, and lack of safety equipment such as helmets and seatbelts.
The RCMP reminds the public that enhanced enforcement efforts will continue throughout the summer across the province.
Phase 2 will capture enforcement efforts in RCMP-NL enforcement areas, says Corporal Garland.
