Premier Andrew Furey insists neither Quebec nor Hydro-Quebec are involved in talks to achieve rate mitigation due to Muskrat Falls.
The Opposition Tories say they’re concerned the province is looking to sell off hydro assets to the highest bidder.
They also note recent Quebec commentary on scooping up the asset from a province desperate to dig itself out of debt.
Furey says that’s not on, saying the goal is for this province to be the primary beneficiary of the project and the entire Churchill River.
He says Newfoundland and Labrador and Ottawa are the only parties involved in rate mitigation talks.
He reiterated that there are no active discussions or negotiations with Hydro-Quebec, calling such reports “fabricated.”
Furey says the parameters for an agreement are publicly known, such as an equity arrangement with Ottawa, monetizing carbon credits or potential future energy from the project, as well as possibly reorganizing the debt structure.
The premier has said a deal must be done before the fall to prevent electricity rates from doubling.
That’s due to occur if and when Muskrat Falls comes on stream as scheduled in November.
