The NLMA has a new president.
Dr. Susan MacDonald, who has been practicing palliative medicine in St. John’s for more than 20 years, took over from Dr. Lynnette Powell following the association’s AGM on Saturday.
MacDonald says her first priority is to conclude negotiations with government “as quickly as possible.”
The negotiations are happening at what MacDonald calls a critical time, and the province’s health system is in need of “fundamental reforms.”
MacDonald told delegates this weekend that there are signs that major change is on the horizon for the province’s health care system, and with change comes a “tremendous opportunity” to make the kinds of necessary health system reforms.
She says the Health Accord process is underway, something she expects will “creatively deconstruct and rebuild” the province’s health care system and she wants physicians to be at the forefront of health policy decisions.
