Too many skaters, and not enough ice. That’s the consensus from a study on the examination of the supply and demand conditions at 17 rinks in the St. John’s-metro area.
A quick synopsis from the study by Tom Clift shows that all but one rink in the St. John’s-metro area is booked to capacity, with many local arena managers reporting that they are maintaining a waitlist of individuals & groups that are interested in renting ice time.
The report says over 95 per cent of ice rinks in the area report they are fully booked between 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. on weekdays, and 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. on weekends.
President of Stadium Partners NL, and outgoing Hockey NL President Jack Lee says there have been instances where children have been turned away from minor hockey organizations due to a lack of capacity.
Lee says the data validates their confidence in the need for additional ice surfaces in the area.
The proposed plan includes four ice sheets, three courts, soccer pitches, and much more.
