The Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay is calling on the provincial government to provide what it calls adequate resources to address illegal activities in the community that it says are posing a threat to public safety.
Lake Melville MHA Perry Trimper raised the matter in the House of Assembly on the issue earlier this week.
In a statement to the town’s website, the town council outlines the numerous meetings held with the RCMP and other community stakeholders regarding “indecent acts, public drunkenness, trespassing, and loitering” yet it says, the problem continues to get worse.
The town says as a municipality it does not have the authority, resources, or capacity to deal with mental health and addiction issues, something it says lies with the provincial and federal governments.
