The former executive director of the Gathering Place is running for the Liberals in the next federal election.
Joanne Thompson will be the party’s candidate in St. John’s East.
The announcement was made on Saturday via Twitter—days after NDP MP Jack Harris made his farewell speech in the House of Commons.
I am proud to share that I have been named the @liberal_party candidate for St. John's East! Thank you to the volunteers and voters for the support and trust you've placed in me. I am eager to get to work and meet the residents of SJE as part of #TeamTrudeau! #nlpoli #cdnpoli pic.twitter.com/hvxS3AzYax

Thompson is also a registered nurse and co-owner of the family business Diamond Design.
The 44th federal election must take place on or before October 16, 2023, but it’s widely believed it could be called this fall.
No other candidates have been announced in the riding.
