A rally is being held at Colonial Building in St. John’s on Thursday regarding Canada Day celebrations.
The movement comes on the heels of the discovery of over 1,000 unmarked graves at former residential school sites across the country.
The rally is being held by the Indigenous Activist Collective and other groups, including the Social Justice Co-Op and Black Lives Matter NL. They’re responding to calls from the group Idle No More to have Canada Day canceled.
According to a Facebook page created for the event, Canada’s “violent history” should not be celebrated.
The event is taking place at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Colonial Building in St. John’s.
