Memorial University has announced its first vice-president (Indigenous).
Catharyn Andersen of Makkovik, Labrador was appointed to the role last week.
The position will focus on continuing to build meaningful relationships with Indigenous Peoples and advancing the university’s goal of Indigenization.
Andersen has served as special advisor to the president on Indigenous Affairs since 2015 and led the creation of the university’s first Strategic Framework for Indigenization.
Andersen’s appointment marks just the second vice-president (Indigenous) position at a Canadian university.
Nunatsiavut President Johannes Lampe offered his congratulations to Andersen for her historic appointment.
He says she has demonstrated a commitment to advancing Indigenous issues and preserving Labrador Inuit language, history and culture—and says he is certain she will continue doing so in the new role.
