The President of the Newfoundland Pony Society is commending the owner of the province’s only foal to be born this year.
Jack Harris commends the commitment of pony owners like Paige Payne of Parson’s Pond, who welcomed Opal over the weekend.
Harris says times have changed, making breeding of endangered Newfoundland ponies more challenging.
The animals used to breed on the headlands but the ponies are not allowed to roam like they once did, says Harris. The animals were allowed to roam because people didn’t own pasture land, which is a hindrance to some people interested in the breed.
Another photo of sweet Opal with her mamma. And let’s not forget the sire, handsome « Spirit of Topsail, » one of few #newfoundlandpony #stallions in the province! This foal gives us hope for the future survival of this #endangeredbreed. pic.twitter.com/S8VIJTqT2V
