The World Wildlife Fund is hoping to restore the mouth of the Parker’s River on the Great Northern Peninsula to help improve Arctic Char and Atlantic Salmon populations.
The WWF is proposing to dredge and stabilize the bank in the river channel with large pieces of wood placed in the channel banks at the location of new pools to provide what they call “critical” cover habitat for the fish in their key early life stages.
No new road construction is required in the area, which is near Cook’s Harbour, but the access road south of the river may need to be upgraded to allow for heavy equipment.
The WWF’s proposal is before the department for environmental assessment. The deadline for public comment is August 6th.
