The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is cracking down on illegal after-market parts on vehicles throughout the province.
In recent years many neighbourhoods, such as Signal Hill, have raised concerns about after-market modifications to things like exhausts. They argue that the increased noise is having adverse effects on their lives.
Yesterday the RNC in conjunction with Service NL Highway Enforcement officers conducted a checkpoint near the Geo Centre on Signal Hill. They were doing checks for valid driver’s licenses, insurance and registration, as well as vehicle inspections for illegal after-market parts.
RNC Constable James Cadigan says they are hearing similar concerns across the province.
Some car enthusiasts have argued against such enforcement. They say most drivers are responsible and that they should be free to modify their vehicles with parts bought legally. To that point, Cadigan goes back to the health aspect.
He says they are hearing “loud and clear” that people are struggling as a result of “excessive noise and aggressive behaviour.” He says that they have the power to hold people accountable who are putting the health and safety of communities at risk.
