A man lobbying for a turning lane into his resort along the Trans-Canada Highway took his protest too far on Saturday. So much so that RCMP had to intervene and tell him to stop.
Neil Dawe had completely blocked the highway with a trailer, forcing vehicles to divert and use a road that leads to his resort.
Irate drivers called police over the delay and safety issues. RCMP responded and Dawe complied with an order to stop blocking the highway. It’s not clear yet if charges will be laid.
Provincial officials have said construction of a left turning lane to allow access to a private business is possible, but it would have to be paid for by the business owner.
Ironically, Dawe has been raising safety concerns about the lack of a turning lane in that area for some time. He had previously blocked the road where construction is now underway in hopes of having the highway widened, and was promptly arrested.
Officials say they respect a person’s right to protest, but note that illegally blocking and diverting traffic is unacceptable.
