A St. John’s-based illustrator is hopeful that highlighting local comic book talent will open doors for others in this province to enter the industry.
Paul Tucker is the visual artist behind the new sci-fi series Hollow Heart, written by Paul Allor. It’s described as a “queer monster love story” that delves into the complexities of relationships. Tucker says it’s an emotional story that explores themes of empathy, and the risks therein.
Five issues are currently available, and Tucker says the sixth is coming out next month.
He calls it thrilling to see his work on store shelves, and hopes others will recognize that they can launch a career without needing to move away. Working from Newfoundland and Labrador, though, does bring its own challenges.
From his studio in St. John’s, Tucker says he still feels a sense of isolation—for example, there is greater difficulty travelling to major conventions to meet others in the industry. Fortunately, he says, there are other local artists and writers who are making names for themselves.
While the first issue of Hollow Heart came out in February, Tucker is excited to host his first public signing for the series tonight at Downtown Comics in St. John’s, from 6 to 8 p.m.
