Accused killer Kurt Churchill made his first public appearance this morning since being returned to the province on murder charges.
Churchill, 44, appeared in provincial court on video from Her Majesty’s Penitentiary. His current lawyer Robbie Ash reiterated that his client is eager to apply for bail which, given the seriousness of the charges against him, must happen in Supreme Court.
Ash told Judge Lois Skanes he has been receiving details of the Crown’s case, or disclosure against Churchill, but will need more time to review it.
That matter will return to provincial court in mid-August.
Meanwhile, at almost the same time across the street at Supreme Court, the federal Crown was applying for an extension to retain items seized from Churchill’s house on Craigmillar Avenue, where he’s accused of fatally shooting 47-year-old Jamie Cody last July.
The Crown wants to hold onto about half a million dollars in cash, as well as a money counter, baggies and vacuum sealer until at least next April.
Those items were seized during the murder investigation, but are part of a separate case against Churchill into alleged money laundering.
That application will be back in Supreme Court in September.
