The provincial government is offering support to help Newfoundlanders and Labradorians interested in personally sponsoring refugees.
The Minister of Immigration, Gerry Byrne, says disturbing images coming out of Afghanistan has many people asking what they can do to help those seeking refuge from persecution and war.
The province is providing the Association for New Canadians with $110,000 dollars from the NL Settlement and Integration Program to hire a Private Sponsorship Coordinator to help and guide people and groups interested in sponsoring refugees.
The federal government is solely responsible for the private sponsorship of refugees, but the Private Sponsorship Coordinator will be able to help people navigate the system.
