A group opposed to sharing the city’s Grand Concourse trail system with cyclists has received mixed responses to a question posed to candidates running for council.
The group Protecting Pedestrian Trails asked: “Do you believe the river trails should remain pedestrian-only — for walkers, runners, or persons with mobility issues — or do you think they should be widened, straightened, and paved in order for the trail to be shared with cyclists?”
The group sent the question, including background information, to all declared candidates, except for a few they couldn’t reach.
In the end, the majority were either undecided or did not respond, followed by nine who were against paving trails to allow for bikes. Only three of the nearly 30 candidates supported paving the trails.
The group wants to reverse a council decision to move ahead with the bike plan for the Rennies River and Virginia River sections.
Municipal election day is September 28th.
