Tropical Storm Odette is expected to dump up to 95 mm of rain on parts of the eastern portion of the island today, but winds accompanying the storm are not expected to be as high as originally forecast.
The storm comes just over a week after Hurricane Larry caused widespread wind and sea surge damage throughout the region, particularly in St. Mary’s and Placentia bays.
Environment Canada says showers on the Avalon today will change to heavy rain this afternoon, with localized downpours possible leading to flash floods and the pooling of water on roads. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is also possible.
Rainfall rates in excess of 25 mm per hour are possible late this afternoon and through to early tomorrow morning.
A tropical cyclone information statement has been issued for St. John’s, the southern Avalon, and the Burin and Bonavista peninsulas.
