History was made in St. John’s last night with the election of the city’s first transgender candidate.
Ophelia Ravencroft, also the province’s first openly transgender elected official, handily won her seat in Ward 2, a little more than a year after she came in a close second in the ward in a byelection.
Ravencroft garnered nearly 45 per cent of the vote. She says after living in the city for the last 15 years, she noticed a growing list of things that needed to be addressed.
Those issues include sidewalk snow clearing, public transit, and affordable housing—and watching the “relative inaction” from multiple levels of government caused her to put herself forward.
