The NunatuKavut Community Council is pushing back against the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami’s plea to the federal government that it not recognize the NCC as an “Inuit group”.
The ITK published an open letter to the Prime Minister, opposing the NCC’s push to be recognized.
The NCC call the letter “ill-informed” and “discriminatory”.
They say that the ITK have no right to determine whether or not the NCC receive federal supports.
They say they have experienced the same hardships as other Indigenous communities around the country, and the letter from the ITK does not change that.
The NCC says it has reached out to ITK President Natan Obed, but has not received a response.
