A brief wave of thunder, lightning and heavy rain caused power outages and challenges for drivers on parts of the Avalon Peninsula Saturday morning.
Almost 10,000 customers were without power for a few hours due to lightning strikes, one of which damaged a structure on one of Newfoundland Power’s main transmission lines that serves the Riverhead-Trepassey area.
A photo Tweeted out by the utility showed the top of the structure split by the strike. Power was still out in the area early Saturday afternoon as crews made their way to the site which is located in the back country.
Most areas of metro St. John’s had power restored by noon.
