The official opposition is raising questions about the levels of policing in the province.
In the House of Assembly on Thursday, PC MHA Helen Conway-Ottenheimer questioned Justice Minister John Hogan about the number of RCMP officers in the province, with concerns that numbers are dwindling in some areas.
Conway-Ottenheimer says the province is responsible for 70 per cent of funding for the police force under the current cost-sharing arrangement, but she’s hearing from RCMP detachments that there’s a shortfall of about $14-million.
She says that amount has been frozen for the last 10 years, and the RCMP is being asked to do more with less.
That raises concerns about detachments closing down, decreased response times, and more.
On the issue of decreasing numbers for the force, Minister Hogan says the RCMP and the province are in constant communication.
He says they speak with the RCMP on a weekly and monthly basis to ensure they have the funding they need under the fiscal constraints that exist.
