Thirty-four inmates and three staff at Dorchester Penitentiary’s medium-security unit in New Brunswick have tested positive for COVID-19.
Corrections Canada officials are monitoring the situation and measures are in place to minimize the spread of the virus within the facility.
Contact tracing is underway and COVID testing is being offered to both inmates and staff at the medium-security unit. Officials say the number of active cases currently reported may change as more testing is carried out.
Vaccinations are also being offered to inmates, 86 per cent of whom are fully vaccinated and 88 per cent of whom have received their first dose. In the meantime, video and phone visitation is being offered to help inmates connect with family and their support networks.
