A controversial development in the capital city’s downtown is back on the agenda this week, with some area stakeholders calling foul on the city’s consultation process.
Parish Lane Development Inc. is looking to develop the former site of the Cathedral Parish Hall into a condo building.
Today, council will vote on rezoning the land, which would allow the development to continue.
The Basillica Heritage Foundation says voting to change the zoning would show that council supports what they call an “out of scale, out of character” development.
Executive director John FitzGerald says there has been “no meaningful discussions” between the nearby churches and the city about the situation. He says they’ve asked for them but they have not happened.
FitzGerald says the city passed a new bylaw to protect heritage areas, and the first thing they’re doing is looking at constructing a high-rise condo.
He says that UNESCO cites high-rise construction as one of the biggest threats to heritage, yet Mayor Danny Breen has not been willing to listen to them.
