A 60 Minutes special on CBS this weekend is set to highlight Fogo Island, which has some in the province talking about how other municipalities can replicate that town’s success.
Craig Pollett, CEO of Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador, cites work done by Dr. Natalie Slawinski of MUN about Fogo’s success.
He says what’s happening in the town is very much a “Fogo thing,” and is customized to who and what they are.
He says they have a history of pulling together when needed, and what’s happening with the Shorefast charity and the Fogo Island Inn is a “perfect storm” of what regional development can be.
He explains that they identified what’s unique to them and built on it, which isn’t a new concept, but is sometimes hard to do.
He cites the work of Zita Cobb in the community, and says sometimes it takes someone coming in from the outside to get things started.
“…and that’s what happened in the case of Fogo,” he said.
“They had people and leaders in the community willing to do the work, they just needed a spark to tell them which direction to go in.”
