The City of St. John’s is reminding residents that the new rules for fireworks take effect on New Year’s Eve.
The bylaw limits the use of personal fireworks to twice a year, on New Year’s Eve and Canada Day, between 7:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m.
The bylaw was triggered by complaints about the disruption caused by fireworks being set off at all hours of the day and night.
Councillor Maggie Burton says the city will mostly rely on residents to report incidents of non-compliance.
She says anyone with concerns about firework use can call 311 or email the city, and an inspector will investigate, which could result in a warning or a fine of up to $5,000.
Special Events approval will be required for the use of fireworks other than on the days specified.
