The federal government is warning of a “looming crisis” as Omicron numbers continue to rise worldwide and across Canada.
Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer, Dr. Teresa Tam says measures must be taken to help counteract the most rapidly spreading variant to date.
She says if Omicron replaces Delta, the sheer number of cases could inundate the health care system in a very short period of time.
Dr. Tam says over the last seven days, an average of over 5000 new cases were reported daily across Canada – 45 per cent higher than the previous seven-day period.
Dr. Tam is strongly encouraging people to get their booster shot to add that extra layer of protection, and Ottawa is recommending other measures.
That includes updated guidance on indoor ventilation, and recommendations on the proper use, construction and use of face masks.
She’s asking to seriously consider their holiday plans and that Canadians avoid travel outside the country.
Government to Make Further Changes if Necessary
Federal Minister of Health Jean-Yves Duclos says government will stay alert and be ready to make further changes as necessary.
He says travel restrictions imposed against certain African nations are being lifted as of tomorrow.
He says the controversial measure has served its purpose is no longer necessary.
Meanwhile, a pre-arrival PCR test will be required for all travellers leaving the country for less than 72 hours.
Minister Duclos says the pre-arrival test will be required as of December 22nd and will have to be taken in a country other than Canada.
