The Gander and Area Chamber of Commerce has been warned by police of counterfeit bills in circulation in the Gander area.
The Chamber says the denominations most commonly in circulation are $50 dollar bills. The Chamber has brochures for members to help identify counterfeit currency, and the Bank of Canada also has tips on things to watch for.
Meanwhile, the Chamber is asking members to keep an eye out for people who might be trying to purchase large quantities of gift cards. Scammers could harass unwitting victims into purchasing gift cards and leaving them high and dry. They’re asking members to train staff to identify potential victims of scams and question customers on their purchases when they suspect something is not right.
