The Rovers Ground Search and Rescue is offering a reminder not to venture out onto ice surfaces yet this year.
The Rovers tweeted the warning after a resident spotted people on the ice in the vicinity of a Torbay school. The Rovers says while they are unsure of the ice conditions at this time, it is doubtful any ice on the Avalon is safe.
Ice needs to be more than 3 inches thick in order to hold the weight of a person on foot, 10 cm for ice fishing, and at least 12 cm for snowmobiling.
They’re asking parents to talk to their children about the dangers of venturing out onto the ice and to teach them what to do if they, or a friend, fall through.
Tips and information can be found on the AdventureSmart website.
