A local non-profit that helps tackle food insecurity in the province is working to address ballooning food prices which they say will have an impact on their users.
Bridges to Hope has received a $25,000 donation courtesy of ExxonMobil and United Way NL.
According to Bridges to Hope manager Jody Williams, that money will be important for them in the face of increased needs in the new year as the price of milk, fruits, veggies, and meats is expected to go up next year.
Those costs will compound with the 10,000 to 12,000 people they service every year, leading Williams to predict that the overall number of people availing of their service will increase.
Right now, he says they see a lot of people and families who work minimum wage jobs coming in. They have also seen a “huge” increase in the number of seniors needing assistance.
He says those are their two main demographics. He wants the public to know that not everybody who goes to the food bank doesn’t work; in fact, a lot of their clients are employed.
