The fisheries union would like to see the decision-makers in the industry rely more heavily on those who spend their days on the water.
Scientists who do stock assessments say they use information from a variety of sources, including harvesters, but the FFAW says they are not involved in the discussion to any great extent. That was a complaint back in the days leading up to the 1992 cod moratorium, and it’s still a concern today.
FFAW President Keith Sullivan says there is a lot of god people at DFO doing great work but government, as a unit, doesn’t pay much attention to what harvesters have to say.
