A man from the Burin Peninsula has been found guilty of breaking into a lounge and stealing thousands of dollars from a bank machine.
Anthony Farrell was originally charged with breaking into JJ Billiards and Lounge in Salt Pond-Burin and Admirals Galley and Keg in Marystown, but convicted of only the one in Burin.
The incidents happened in the winter of 2020.
The alarm at JJ’s went off just after 1:30 on the morning of January 13th. The RCMP stopped a car nearby, in which Farrell was a passenger shortly after that.
Wire cutters and a pry bar were found in the vehicle, and Farrell had almost $5,000 cash in crisp 20-dollar bills on his person.
Justice Katherine O’Brien ruled that the Crown did not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Farrell had committed the Marystown break-in, but did find him guilty of the one in Salt Pond.
He was also found guilty of possession of break-in instruments and stolen property.
Damage to the ATM machine at JJ’s was so extensive that it had to be replaced at a cost of almost $4,000.
Sentencing will come later.
